What if the real purpose of health is freedom?
We often think about health as something to improve, measure or manage. But health matters for a much bigger reason: it affects what we're able to do with our lives.
CAPABLE explores the idea that looking after ourselves isn't simply about becoming healthier or trying to live longer. It's about preserving the physical, mental, emotional and social capability to keep participating in the life we value.
To travel. To work and contribute. To stay active. To pursue our interests. To spend time with the people we love. To help others. And to maintain as much independence as possible as we grow older.
Health is not the destination
CAPABLE isn't a diet, exercise program or prescriptive health manual. Nor is it about perfection, extreme routines or trying to control every health outcome.
Instead, it invites us to think differently about why looking after ourselves matters in the first place.
The book explores some of the foundations that support lifelong capability — including movement, strength, nutrition, sleep, connection, purpose and meaning, mental and emotional wellbeing, and preventive healthcare.
Each contributes to something larger than health itself: our capacity to continue engaging with life.
The choices we make today influence what remains possible tomorrow
Ageing is inevitable. Losing every aspect of our capability with age is not.
We cannot control everything that happens to our health, and CAPABLE doesn't pretend otherwise. But many of the choices we make repeatedly over months, years and decades can influence the range of possibilities available to us later in life.
That changes the question from:
“How can I be healthier?”
to something perhaps more meaningful:
“What do I want to remain capable of doing?”
And once we have an answer to that question, looking after ourselves can begin to mean something very different.
The goal isn't simply to add years to life. It's to preserve as much life as possible within those years.
