Sustainable lifestyle change — without relying on willpower

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this style of coaching best suited for?

This approach tends to resonate most with people who:

  • have tried to change before without lasting success

  • feel frustrated by starting and stopping

  • want sustainable health and wellbeing, not quick fixes

  • are tired of relying on motivation and willpower

  • are willing to engage regularly and reflect between sessions

If you’re looking for change that fits real life and lasts beyond short bursts of effort, this work is likely a good fit.

Do I need to be highly motivated to start?

You don’t need to feel motivated every day — motivation naturally rises and falls.

What is important is that you have a genuine desire for something to be better or different in your life.

Coaching works best when change matters to you at some level. I can’t create that importance for you — and I won’t try to convince you to change. That part has to come from you.

My role is to help you:

  • understand what’s been getting in the way
  • design changes that fit your real life
  • reduce reliance on willpower once you’ve decided change matters

If the desire for change isn’t there yet, coaching may not be the right step right now — and that’s okay.

Why don't we start with goal setting straight away?

Many people already know what they want to change — and have often set goals many times before.

What’s usually missing isn’t clarity around the goal, but understanding why those goals haven’t stuck in the past.

In the early stages of coaching, we focus on building awareness around your current lifestyle, habits, routines, energy, and environment. Once that foundation is clear, any goals we set are far more realistic and sustainable.

We slow things down at the start so progress holds later.

Will we still set goals?

Yes — absolutely.

The difference is when and how we set them.

Rather than goals being the starting point, they become a by-product of clarity. Goals are treated as experiments and learning tools, not pressure points or pass/fail tests.

This helps remove self-judgement and makes change feel more achievable.

Why does your first session feel different to other coaching experiences?

Many coaching models move quickly into visioning and action planning.

My approach spends more time upfront helping you understand:

  • how you’re actually living day-to-day

  • what’s influencing your habits behind the scenes

  • what’s been getting in the way of change — without blame

Many people spend years being told to 'try harder'. This approach focuses first on understanding what's really getting in the way.

Is this approach only about habits and health behaviours?

Behaviours are a big part of the work — but they're not the whole picture.

We also explore:

  • identity (the kind of person you’re becoming)

  • values and overall wellbeing

  • environment and daily structure

  • mental and emotional load

  • support systems and real-life constraints

Supportive habits are most effective when they align with who you are and the life you're actually living.

What if I just want practical steps, not deep reflection?

That’s completely okay.

Reflection in this process isn’t about overthinking — it’s about reducing friction.

The purpose of awareness is to make practical steps easier, not harder. Often, once you understand yourself better, the practical changes become simpler, clearer, and more realistic.

What does the 12-week coaching journey involve?

It’s a structured one-to-one coaching journey designed to help you build sustainable change in real-life conditions. We move step-by-step from awareness and clarity into practical behaviour design, support, and long-term follow-through.

Explore the full 12-week coaching journey here.

Why are sessions held weekly rather than occasionally?

Behaviour change is easier when support is regular.

Weekly sessions help keep awareness fresh, allow adjustments when life changes, and maintain momentum without relying on motivation alone.

Weekly sessions allow us to:

  • notice patterns early

  • adjust quickly when something isn’t working

  • maintain momentum without relying on motivation

  • keep change grounded in real life as it’s happening

Spacing sessions too far apart often leads to loss of clarity and unnecessary resets.

Behaviour change isn’t built through intensity — it’s built through consistency.

What if I miss a session or life gets in the way?

That’s completely understandable — real life can be unpredictable, and disruption is a normal part of change. If you need to reschedule a session, we’ll do our best to find an alternative time. Because this is a structured 12-week journey, we’ll simply continue from where we left off and adjust pacing as needed so you stay supported.

Full details around rescheduling and missed sessions are covered in the Coaching Agreement, which you’ll receive before you commit to anything.

What happens in the introductory conversation?

The introductory conversation is a short, no-pressure chat to help you decide whether this approach feels like the right fit. We’ll briefly talk about what you’re struggling with, what you’ve tried before, and what you’re hoping will be different — and I’ll explain how coaching works.

How much does coaching cost?

Coaching is offered as a structured 12-week journey. Fees are discussed after a short introductory conversation, once we’ve explored whether this approach feels like the right fit for you. There’s no pressure to continue — the purpose is simply to help you decide whether it’s right for you.

Why are coaching sessions phone-based?

I offer one-to-one coaching by phone because it allows sessions to be calm, focused, and structured. It helps you speak openly without feeling “on show”, and it allows me to guide the conversation clearly so nothing important is missed.  Phone coaching is often easier to fit into real life  — especially when schedules are unpredictable.

What results can I expect?

Results vary for each person, and no outcome is guaranteed — but this approach is designed to help you build consistency and reduce the “start–stop” cycle that often comes from relying on motivation alone. Over time, the aim is to build confidence and self-trust, so progress feels more stable and sustainable in real-life conditions. The aim isn’t perfection — it’s progress you can actually maintain. The coaching journey is designed to help you better understand yourself, build self-trust, and create change that fits your real life.

What happens after the first session?

After we establish awareness and direction, coaching becomes progressively more practical and behaviour-focused.

We design small, meaningful changes that build momentum over time — with regular check-ins, reflection, and adjustment as needed.

Change isn’t forced. It’s built.

How is this different from just reading a book or doing a program on my own?

Books and programs can be incredibly helpful — and many people have already tried them.

Coaching provides:

  • personalised insight and feedback

  • real-time reflection and support

  • accountability without judgement

  • help navigating obstacles as they arise

  • guidance tailored to your lifestyle, not a generic plan

Most importantly, coaching helps you apply ideas to your real life — not an idealised version of it.

Is this the same as therapy, counselling, or medical care?

No. Health & Wellness Coaching is not therapy, counselling, or medical treatment.

I don’t diagnose conditions, treat mental health concerns, or prescribe diets or exercise programs. Coaching focuses on behaviour change, self-awareness, and practical lifestyle support — helping you understand what’s getting in the way of change and design habits that fit your real life.

Where additional support would be helpful, I encourage collaboration with, or referral to, appropriate medical or allied health professionals.

How is this different from casual or short-term coaching?

This is a structured, in-depth coaching process designed for meaningful and lasting change.

We work together regularly, with space between sessions for reflection, habit experimentation, and integration into daily life.

This approach suits people who are ready to engage, not just talk — and who understand that sustainable change takes time, consistency, and support.

If you’re curious but unsure whether this approach is right for you, a short introductory conversation is the best place to start.
